Please take a moment to read the following procedures and policies for the school year.
Drop off and pick up procedures
We have a new bell schedule this year!
The first bell rings and 8:25 and we will start learning at 8:35. This means that students should be at school and in their classrooms by 8:35 to avoid interruptions and distractions. Students should not arrive earlier than 8:20 as we do not have adequate supervision in our school before this time.
You can see the complete bell schedule, including the schedule for Early Out days here.
In the morning and after school, students will enter the school by the main front doors. We ask that parents and students remain outside until the bell rings in the morning unless you have a prearranged appointment. At recess, students will use the door located in the grade 3 hallway near the playground.
Visiting the school? If you are visiting the school to volunteer or for a meeting, please enter through the front door and visit the office to sign in. You will receive a visitor tag to allow all members of our school community to recognize you as a guest in our building. Picking up your child? If you pick up your child after school, please meet him or her outside at the main door, the grade 3 door or another designated meeting place. If you need to pick up your child during the day, please let the office staff know. Your child will be called down to meet you in the main entryway.
Change in your after-school routine? If your child will be getting home in a different way than normal, please let me know by sending an email. This will help us avoid any confusion and is particularly important for bus students as they will be sent home on the bus unless the school has been notified of a change. Additionally, students will not be allowed to leave with another family unless the school has been notified of the arrangement.
Homework
This year, no recurring homework will be assigned to students. Students are strongly encouraged to read in both French and English on a regular basis. See the next section for information about our home reading challenge for the year.
Students looking to do some extra work at home may also like to:
Students will occasionally be assigned tasks to be completed at home. These tasks may include:
Learning a new word or fact related to our current units.
Interviewing a family member
Doing some research or thinking to prepare for an in-class assignment
Home reading Challenge
This year, students will be participating in the Tower of Books reading challenge. A package will be sent home early in September with all the information students will need to get started.
For the challenge, students will select a personal goal of reading 20, 30 or 40 books from a variety of different categories. Books may be in French or English and I encourage students to read books in both languages. We will also be doing a variety of activities to go along with the books students are reading, such as book reviews and book recommendations.
Missing School
If you know in advance that your child will be away from school, please notify the school by calling the office.
I do not generally prepare or send home work for students who miss school due to illness, competitions or holidays.
Instead, I encourage students to do any of the following:
For short absences, I will help your child catch up on any work missed.
For longer absences, it is not always possible to help students catch up on concepts missed, especially in Science and Social Studies. If you are concerned that your child will be behind due to a long absence, feel free to contact me. I am more than happy to give you an idea of what concepts I expect to cover (or which were covered) during your child's absence.
Birthday Treats and parties
Please keep in mind that Campbelltown has a "Nut Aware" policy. If you would like, you may send a special treat for the class to help celebrate your child's birthday. From time to time, our class will also have a special snack for a class party or event.
In accordance with the EIPS Nutrition Policy (Administrative Procedure 164), we are striving to follow the guidelines set out by the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth. Special snacks at school must fit into the "Choose Most Often" category. Items that do not fall into this category (ie. cake, cupcakes, ice cream, etc…) will be returned home with your child.
Some examples of suggested treats are:
Fruit or vegetables
Whole grain crackers with cheese and meat
Hummus and whole grain pita
A complete list of all foods (and suggested snacks) that fit into this category can be found in the Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth on pages 14-22 as well as page 51.
When sending treats to school, please send any packaging along as well. This will help to ensure the safety of students with severe food allergies.
If your child has a severe food allergy or other special dietary considerations, please contact me. You may also like to send an approved snack that can be stored at school for these special occasions.
If treats need to be frozen or refrigerated, please let me knowand drop them off at the office or in our classroom. Please label them carefully and clearly so that nothing gets lost! DO NOT place any treats in the kitchen fridge or freezer (in the gym).
Scholastic Book Orders
