March newsletter
coming close to the end!
It's hard to believe that we have passed the half-way mark and have only 4 more months of school left this year! That being said, there are still lots of fun activities for our grade 3s!
Bienvenue Mme Davies!
We are very excited to welcome Mme Kiana Davies into our classroom for March and April. She is a student teacher from the Faculté St. Jean.
Active Schools Challenge
This month, 3A will be participating in the Active Schools Challenge. For this challenge, we are participating in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. At the end of the challenge, students will receive a pencil box and pass for a free single admission to a Strathcona Country recreation facility. This pass will be valid until June 30, 2019.
Math Facts
In Grade 3, students are expected to be able to use mental math strategies to recall addition and subtraction facts up to 18. Here are some strategies to help your child achieve this:
- Practice math facts for a few minutes each day - you can even do this in the car on the way to school!
- Work on mental math strategies. You can find some examples of these strategies here.
- Practice 'fact families' such as: 4+6=10, 6+4=10, 10-4=6 and 10-6=4
Report Cards going home
With report cards going home at the end of the month, I wanted to take a moment to review our reporting system.
The report card includes 3 comments.
General Learner Comments are an overall glimpse at your child's performance at school. They generally focus on behaviour, social interactions, work ethic, etc.
Areas of Strength focus on academic achievements made throughout the year.
Next Steps are goals for both school and home. They may include strategies that students are working on or specific areas of need, such as French sounds, sight words and math facts, that should be practised at home.
Our marking system is a 5-point scale.
5 - The student is excelling in learning expectations for this time in the year. He is consistently able to complete challenging tasks independently, even in new situations.
4 - The student is meeting learning expectations for this time in the year. She is able to complete some new and challenging tasks.
3 - The student is meeting learning expectations for this time in the year. He is able to complete familiar tasks with some help.
2 - The student is approaching learning expectations for this time in the year. She needs help to complete familiar tasks.
1 - The student is below learning expectations for this time in the year. He struggles to complete familiar tasks even with help.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the report card or your child's achievement.
