Technology at home and in the classroom
The Online Resources section of this website includes many exciting websites and apps. Students are encouraged to visit them on a regular basis as they provide fun and engaging opportunities to practice essential literacy and numeracy skills.
Prodigy is a math website that engages students in and RPG-style adventure. As they explore the world, they battle enemies by correctly answering math problems. Students have created their own accounts and are encouraged to play at home as frequently as they like. I will also be providing students with opportunities to play at school.
Duolingo is a language-learning app and website that provides lessons on a wide variety of vocabulary and grammar topics in French (as well as a variety of other languages). Students can create and account and link it to our class to share their progress. This is another fun way for students to practice and improve their French skills at home.
Epic! is an English reading app and website that students are using during their ELA Daily 5 time. It is provided for free to teachers for their classrooms and as a subscription service (similar to Netflix) for families. All families can receive a free trial to test it out at home.
RAZ kids is another English reading app and website. With our school subscription, students can access English books at their reading level from home. Students can download the Kids A-Z app or access the site by visiting kidsa-z.com. They can connect to our class by entering the teacher code mmeaasen and selecting their names. Currently, all students have the same password - the strawberry icon. If your child would like to change his/her password, please let me know!

Twitter in 3a
As you are likely aware, our class will be using Twitter this year to increase communication between home and school. If you are on Twitter, I encourage you to follow us @laclasse3a. If you are not on Twitter, you can still keep up with us by checking out our Twitter Feed on this site.
Learning Goals for October
French Language ArtsIn FLA, we will continue writing daily in our journals as well a studying our Mots de la semaine. We will also continue having Writers Workshop 2-3 times each week. We are currently working on writing stories about the small moments of our daily lives.
MathematicsWe are working on our first math unit - representing numbers to 1000. There are many online resources that your child can use to learn and practice writing numbers in French. Please keep in mind that many of these resources do not include the "new" rule for writing numbers which we use at school. Fortunately, this rule makes writing numbers way easier! According to the new rule, when writing numbers with more that one word such as 98 (quatre-vingt-dix-huit), there is a hyphen ( - ) between every word of the number, rather than just a space.
Later this month, we will be beginning our Patterns unit which includes skip counting by 3, 4, 5, 10, 25 and 100. |
English language ArtsOur focus areas this month will be:
Reading: We will wrap out our first Reader's Workshop unit - Building a reading life. Then, we will start our first book club of the year. Our theme is "I Can Do it!" - believing in ourselves. Writing: We will continue working on our first Writer's Workshop unit - Personal Narratives. Revising and Editing: Using personal dictionaries to support spelling. We will also continue our daily word sorts. Social STudiesWe will continue learning about India, Tunisia, Peru and Ukraine by studying each country's flag and geography. Along with this study, students will begin to create the flag and map of their own countries.
ScienceWith Mme Hayley, students will be continuing to learn about isopods as well as the life cycles and needs of other animals.
