Learning Goals for September
French Language ArtsIn FLA, we will be beginning to write in our journals on a daily basis. We will also make our first trip to the library. Words of the week (Les Mots de la semaine) will begin later in the month. You can access all of the mots de la semaine for the year here. While students will not have dictée quizzes, these words will be added to their personal dictionaries (Mots Magnifiques) and are expected to be spelled correctly in any written work students complete.
Our focus areas for the month will be: Reading: Mme Aasen will begin to read individually with each student to get an idea of their strengths and areas for growth in French reading. Writing: We will focus on building writing stamina through our daily journal writing. We will also start Writers Workshop and begin writing about small moments that are important to us. Speaking: Students will create and present an All About Me slideshow using Google Slides. They will be allowed to bring in digital copies of photos for this project. More information will be sent home when we begin this project. MathematicsNumber Talks: We will begin daily number talks, focusing on strategies for adding single-digit numbers.
Math Workshop: We will be developing stamina for our math stations and focusing on reviewing key concepts from Grade 2. We will be building and representing numbers to 1000 in a variety of ways such as using math manipulatives, pictures, numbers and words. We will be learning the correct spelling for numbers to 1000. There are many online resources that your child can use to learn and practice writing numbers in French. Please keep in mind that many of these resources do not include the "new" rule for writing numbers which we use at school. Fortunately, this rule makes writing numbers way easier! According to the new rule, when writing numbers with more that one word such as 298 (deux-cent-quatre-vingt-dix-huit), there is a hyphen ( - ) between every word of the number, rather than just a space. |
English Language ArtsFor most students, this will be their first time taking ELA at school! Our focus area this month will be building our confidence in reading and writing in English. We will also be working on:
Reading: Finding Good Fit Books and discovering who we are as readers. Mme Aasen will also be reading with each student individually to get an idea of their strengths and areas for growth in reading. Writing: Creating our writers notebooks and beginning to learn about the writing process by telling personal narrative stories. Revising and Editing: Using personal dictionaries to support spelling. We will also start working on our Words Their Way word sorts. Social StudiesIn Social Studies this year, students will be learning about life in four different countries around the world: Ukraine, Peru, Tunisia and India. As students learn about different aspects of life in these countries, such as quality of life and geography, they will apply their understanding to a giant, year-long project called Mon Pays. Through this project, students will invent their own countries based on what they have learned about different countries in the world. This month, students will give their country a name, create its flag and begin to think about its geography and map.
ScienceWe will be starting our year off with our Animal Life Cycles unit. Check out Mme Hayley's newsletter for more information!
